One of the best ways to make a bad impression when trading goods
online is to dispatch the items with inadequate packaging. Due
to poor packing, items that are sent in good condition can easily
be damaged by the time they reach their purchaser, causing problems
and cost to both parties. Good quality packaging can protect items
that are sent by post or parcel courier and make a positive statement
about your business.
The key to successful packaging is to use the correct materials
for the job. If you need a medium sized cardboard box, find one;
you can't make do with brown paper. Don't use a normal A4 envelope
when what you really need is a padded envelope with air pockets,
bubbles or other filling material. If you are sending collectable
newspapers, magazines or comics then you'll need backing board
and stiffened envelopes. If you are sending delicate items then
you need plenty of bubble wrap and sturdy boxes to put them in.
Some items do not take kindly to standard courier or postal transportation.
Items including delicate electronics and connections require not
only protection against impact but against all unnatural movement
and you may require bespoke collection and delivery arrangements.
Tips for sending common items
Books can be well protected by using bubble wrapping, with stiff
cardboard around and taped, placed in a sealed plastic bag inside
a suitably sized envelope or cardboard packaging / box.
Ceramics can be wrapped in tissue paper and bubble wrapping,
inside a suitable box filled with material such as polystyrene
twirls or even plenty of scrunched newspaper.
Electrical goods should be placed inside a static resistant bag,
if appropriate, then wrapped in bubble wrapping and protected
with plenty of extra padding inside a suitable parcel box.
Posters and other large papers should be rolled up and sent in
a sturdy mailing tube. The ends of the tube should be sealed with
plastic ends which can then be taped to the tube.
